About the Richmond Community Concert Band
The Richmond Community Concert Band has an extensive history in Richmond.
Formed in 1973 by the then-Branch 5 of the Royal Canadian Legion as the Branch 5 Legion Band, we grew rapidly to the present complement of 35 - 45 musicians, with typical concert band instrumentation (reeds, brass and percussion). Music Director Bob Mullett became our leader in 1978 and is still the driving force behind the Band's continued development and progress.
Branch 5 Legion continued to support the Band until it closed its Westminster Highway location in 2001. We then became the Richmond Community Band Society, adopting the name Richmond Legion Community Band for some time, recognizing the organization from which we sprang.
Our name has evolved over time from the Richmond Legion Concert Band, Richmond Legion Community Concert Band, the Richmond Concert Band, to the Richmond Community Concert Band, as we are known today.
We usually perform 8-10 times per year, at seniors centres, formal and informal civic functions such as the Richmond Remembrance Day Ceremony and the Steveston Salmon Festival Canada Day Parade, and at indoor and outdoor public concerts in Richmond and throughout the Lower Mainland.
Our Music Director
Cheryl McHugh
Cheryl McHugh’s work conducting concert bands includes the Douglas College Concert Band, the 15th Field Artillery Regiment Band, and Cadet Bands across the province.
As the Director of the Douglas College Concert Band in 2023, she took the band to a new and exciting calibre of performance. With thoughtful programming, she was able to highlight their strengths while challenging their technique. As a result, the students were excited about the music and worked hard to present a great concert.
As the Director of Music of the Band of the Fifteenth Field Regiment, Vancouver’s professional military band, Cheryl provided musical direction, liaised with sponsor organizations, advised those tasked with running chamber groups on protocol, and selected repertoire. Her position required her to supervise a team that managed the largest library of wind band music in the province, maintain an instrument stores of several hundred pieces of equipment, and coordinate musical and public relations support to Army units across British Columbia.
In addition to conducting courses taken during her graduate studies, Cheryl completed conducting training at the Canadian Armed Forces Music School, participated in a Saskatchewan Orchestral Association International Saito Conducting Workshop with Wayne Toews, and was engaged in professional development organized by the Canadian Armed Forces with Dr. Gillian MacKay and Dr. Angela Schroeder.
